Dr. Ingber's research group focuses on the importance of extracellular matrix (ECM), integrins, and cytoskeletal structure for control of angiogenesis. They combine methods from diverse fields, including molecular cell biology, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and materials science, to address fundamental questions relating to the mechanism of capillary cell growth, differentiation, migration and apoptosis. Ingber was one of the first investigators to show that chemical modulators of ECM turnover can inhibit angiogenesis and induce capillary regression. His discovery also led to the development of the angiogenesisinhibitor, TNP-470, that is currently in human clinical trials.
