Research in the Nicolson laboratory is dedicated to developing new imaging technologies and theranostic approaches for enhanced detection, evaluation, and treatment of cancer. Specifically, we focus on the engineering and application of optical imaging technologies for improved early detection and surgical resection, as well as the development and evaluation of radiotheranostic agents for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Our Two Main Areas of Interest: 1. Developing Optical Imaging Technologies and Contrast Agents for Real-Time Deep Tissue Imaging. Leveraging the depth-imaging capabilities of SESORRS imaging, we aim to: • Evaluate the degree of tumor invasion in real-time. • Identify residual tumor cells on and beneath the resection bed using both endoscopic and intraoperative optical approaches. • Integrate our approach with clinically approved optical imaging techniques, including fluorescence imaging, to improve image-guided resection of multiple solid tumors.
2. Design and Evaluation of Novel Radiotheranostic Agents By harnessing advances in precision medicine, our lab is developing innovative radiotheranostic agents for treating various cancers. Together we aim to: • Develop and deliver molecularly specific contrast agents for precise PET imaging of target-expressing tissues • Enable the targeted delivery of therapeutic radioisotopes (such as 177Lu or 225Ac) to mutant cells. • Identify responders and non-responders to precision therapies, enabling personalized treatment strategies. • Discover biomarkers of response and mechanisms of resistance • Explore the potential of combination therapies with RLT to enhance patient outcomes.
