Within the broad field of heart failure, I have a well-defined interest in the pathophysiology of dilated cardiomyopathy. My clinical research has focused on the functional significance of nitric oxide and oxidative stress in human myocardial failure, and the role of endothelin in pulmonary hypertension. Towards these ends, I have carried out invasive physiologic studies in the cardiac catheterization laboratory using selective intracoronary and intrapulmonary infusions. In addition, I have focused my research efforts on the non-invasive assessment of hemodynamics in heart failure, and have worked with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in the development of novel pharmacological and device therapies for heart failure.
