CRTEC

A Grant of One’s Own is designed for cancer‑focused MDs, MD-PhDs, and PhDs whose research bridges science and patient care and who need structured, flexible support for writing an early‑career grant or fellowship. If you have an idea or an existing draft and limited time for formal workshops, this self‑paced course guides you step by step from concept to complete proposal.
There are six modules and each module combines brief lessons, examples, and videos with guided prompts, assignments, and downloadable worksheets that you can use on your own or with your PI, mentors, and peers. Additional resources and sample materials help you move from ideas to polished drafts.
- The course is free of charge and available to HarvardKey users only. This includes Harvard students, faculty, staff members, and those with Harvard-sponsored affiliation, such as postdoctoral/clinical fellows at Harvard-affiliated institutions. Claim Your HarvardKey.
- Certificate of completion is available for learners who finish all six modules in Canvas.
- The course does not provide CME or other formal academic credit.
Across six modules you will:
- Identify a realistic target fellowship or grant and map out a submission timeline that fits your current stage
- Shape a clear hypothesis, specific aims, and significance and impact story that connect your work to patient outcomes and the broader cancer field
- Plan a feasible set of experiments with appropriate methods, controls, milestones, and timelines
- Present yourself as a strong candidate through a coherent personal statement, biosketch, and reference letters
- Pull together essential standard elements, including budget and justification, methods and rigor language, human or animal sections, and a biostatistics plan
