The Leukemia SPORE is made up of four Cores: the Administrative Core, Biospecimen Banking and the Clinical-Genetic Database Core, Functional and Genetic Precision Medicine Core, and Biostatistics and Computational Biology Core.

Specialized Programs of Research Excellence
Administrative Core
Core Aims: The administrative core is responsible for overall organization of the SPORE and dissemination of SPORE-related updates.
- To monitor research projects and Cores and plan for the future
- To foster collaborative research within the SPORE and between SPOREs
- To integrate the SPORE in Leukemia into the HCC structure
- To provide necessary resources for fiscal oversight
- To promote rapid dissemination of significant research findings
Biospecimen Banking and the Clinical-Genetic Database Core
Core Aims:
- Facilitate translational and laboratory-based research performed by SPORE investigators in Projects 1-3 as well as the Developmental and Career Enhancement Projects
- As well as 1) cryopreservation, storage, and distribution of primary cells from patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and other hematologic diseases, 2) maintenance of an annotated and searchable database containing clinical, pathologic, cytogenetic, and molecular information for patients with myeloid malignancies, and 3) linkage of banked samples with curated clinical and genetic data
Functional and Genetic Precision Medicine Core
Core Aims:
- To provide each SPORE project with access to technology and biomarker testing expertise needed to support translational and clinical research
- To provide both genetic biomarker development and testing (e.g, DNA, RNA sequencing), as well as functional approaches (i.e., direct testing of drugs and combinations on primary patient leukemia cells)
Biostatistics and Computational Biology Core
Core Aims:
- To work with lab-based and clinical investigators on all aspects of the statistical design and analysis of prospective and retrospective clinical studies, correlative studies based on patient samples, animal and other preclinical studies, and basic science experiments
- To work at the earliest stages of conceptual development of each project, bringing the principles of solid experimental design as part of the initial discussions
- To participate in the ongoing analysis of project data and outcomes in real time, troubleshooting unanticipated outcomes, and helping to develop alternative approaches
