Statewide Cancer Burden
Monitoring the Cancer Burden in Massachusetts
We monitor the cancer burden in Massachusetts to better understand the state’s cancer-related needs and identify priority areas for action. Our team reviews data on how often different types of cancer occur and how many people die from cancer or a related condition. When available, we also examine cancer screening rates and how often cancer is diagnosed at a late stage (when it is more serious and harder to treat).
Overall, Massachusetts continues to perform well compared to national averages, with higher rates of cancer diagnoses and lower rates of cancer deaths. Massachusetts ranks among the highest state in the nation for cancer screening, which supports early detection and leads to better outcomes for patients. Despite this progress, cancer remains the leading cause of death in Massachusetts.
Our Community Outreach and Engagement team is committed to supporting Harvard Cancer Consortium activities that help to reduce the burden of cancer for all Massachusetts residents.
