Clinical Trials Facilitation
The Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) team is committed to improving access to and participation in clinical trials across Massachusetts. Through trusted community partnerships, COE serves as a bridge by providing education about clinical trials and sharing research opportunities with community members.
Clinical Trials Train-the-Trainer Education Sessions
COE collaborates with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Clinical Trials Access Committee (CTAC) on their mission to improve care and research for all individuals through improved access to clinical trials. In partnership with the City of Lawrence, COE and CTAC co-developed a culturally tailored clinical trials education curriculum using a train-the-trainer approach. Through this model, four community trainers led seven education sessions, reaching 108 community members in Greater Lawrence about clinical trials. All sessions and materials were provided in Spanish.
Community Events with Clinical Trial Outreach
COE supports clinical trial facilitation through outreach at health fairs, faith-based events, and other community gatherings. These conversations help community members access trusted health information and learn about clinical research opportunities.
SALSA Festival: At the annual SALSA (Supporting Active Lifestyles for All) Festival in Lawrence, Massachusetts, COE and the U54 Outreach Core team hosted an outreach table and provided skin cancer prevention education. COE also partnered with the Center for Early Detection and Interception (CEDI), which shared information about its cancer early detection and prevention initiatives.
Dr. Narjust Florez and Fernando Pacheco from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Cancer Care Access Program joined the outreach effort and shared information about the EQUAL study. The study is assessing the feasibility of a new blood test to screen for EGFR-related lung cancer among East Asian and Hispanic communities at increased risk.
